BECOMING A PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER
This training program is designed to optimize efficiency in the role of a caregiver within residential facilities and home care services in New Brunswick. The program is based on the principles of compassionate care, a synonym for person-centered care.
The program enables students to:
The hybrid model is designed for learners who are self-driven to manage learning tasks.
The theoretical component is delivered through a combination of videoconference teaching and self-learning activities. Knowledge and skills are acquired through lectures, discussions and debates, awareness activities and assignments.
Between teaching sessions, instructors offer support for completion of assignments or other according to needs by telephone, video, or face-to-face.
The practical part of the program is offered through labs and a practicum. The lab setting enhances the ability to perform technical skills that are part of the caregiver’s role. During practicum, knowledges and skills are applied on a continuous basis in partnership with an employer (on-the job-training).
The program is accessible to anyone who is at least 19 years old and able to read and write in English.
The program is a duration 310 hours, spread over approximately ten months, depending on candidates’ progress, commitment, and availability.
Candidates who successfully complete the program are awarded a certificate as a Personal Support Worker in Adult Residential Facilities.
