Program Goals and Objectives
This training program is designed to optimize efficiency in the role of a caregiver within residential facilities and home care services in New Brunswick. The program is based on the principles of compassionate care, a synonym for person-centered care.
The program enables students to:
- Adhere to ethical and legal obligations of the workplace
- Perform duties with a sense of responsibilities
- Apply the principles of compassionate care within their role as caregivers
- Implement all possible means to ensure the safety of others
- Establish positive relationships with residents, family members, coworkers, employers, and visitors
- Recognize, monitor, and report signs and symptoms in the resident that are cause for concern and intervene accordingly within their role and responsibilities
- Apply skills and techniques according to their scope of practice
- Apply other concepts and principles that underlie the role of a caregiver
HYBRID TRAINING
The hybrid model is designed for learners who are self-driven to manage learning tasks.
The theoretical component is delivered through a combination of videoconference teaching and self-learning activities. Knowledge and skills are acquired through lectures, discussions and debates, awareness activities and assignments.
Between teaching sessions, instructors offer support for completion of assignments or other according to needs by telephone, video, or face-to-face.
The practical part of the program is offered through labs and a practicum. The lab setting enhances the ability to perform technical skills that are part of the caregiver’s role. During practicum, knowledges and skills are applied on a continuous basis in partnership with an employer (on-the job-training).
Admission Requirements
The program is accessible to anyone who is at least 19 years old and able to read and write in English.
Duration of Training
The program is a duration 310 hours, spread over approximately ten months, depending on candidates’ progress, commitment, and availability.
- Number of hours for the theoretical component: 235 hours
(including approximately 14 class days) - Number of lab hours: 15 h
(excluding teaching offered during regular class days) - Number of hours in practicum: 60 hours
(on-the-job training)
Certification
Candidates who successfully complete the program are awarded a certificate as a Personal Support Worker in Adult Residential Facilities.
